iPhone storms Europe after successful US launch

"The most sophisticated, outlook-challenging piece of electronics to come along in years." - David Pogue

The iPhone is about to storm Europe after its recent US launch created a frenzy there, with customers queuing for days to be the first to get their hands on Apple's latest must-have gadget.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs announced that the device would be available exclusively on the 02 network in Britain from November 9.

The 8-gigabyte model will be offered for sale at £265 (or $536, which is $139 more expensive than what Apple now charges in the US).

Customers in the UK will be asked to sign an 18-month contract with O2 on a monthly tariff of £35, £45 or £55.

The same date has been targeted for the device's launch in Germany where it will sell for 399 euros (558 dollars) through Deutsche Teleko.

Telekom's T-Mobile wireless unit has secured rights to the iPhone in Austria, Hungary, Croatia and the Netherlands.

Apple has linked with Orange for the French launch.

Apple aims to sell 1 million iPhones in Europe in the last quarter of this year. It sold 1 million of the devices in the first 76 days following its debut in the US.

Steve Jobs wants to sell 10 million iPhones in fiscal 2008, which represents about 1% of global handset sales.

The iPhone combines a touch-sensitive mobile phone handset with a built-in iPod media player and a wireless internet browser.
